Soooo...the bride never finds things out at the time they are happening because no one wants to upset her...fair 'nuf. My mom and I had worked very hard to make sure the wedding was as perfect as possible, but some things just are not in our control. My mom forked over thousands of dollars of her very hard-earned money to make my day wonderful, which it was...but some things just could have been better!! (My mom and I have discussed this many times, and we both agree).
When we ordered my bouquet and the centerpieces (well, all the flowers, really), we specifically said that we wanted NO FAKE PEARLS in any of the pieces...wellllll, guesssssss whaaaaaat (in my sarcastic voice)...my bouquet had FAKE PEARLS. My bouquet stems were supposed to be wrapped in a pretty silk-like ribbon all the way to the bottom...so NO stems were showing...hmmm...yeah...not so much. STEMS. STEMS. STEMS everywhere.
On to the wedding...so, I hear much later that my Uncle Greg (whom was doing one of the readings), was not at the church just a few minutes before the wedding was supposed to start. Apparently, my Aunt Carol had lost her earrings, and everyone in the house was helping look for them....my uncle told me he drove, like, 90 mph down I-69 trying to make it to the church on time!!! Any who, Dave, one of the groomsmen, came from the back of the church to let my mom, whom had already been seated, know that my uncle was not in the church, and that he would fill in if Uncle Greg did not make it in time. That was very generous of him! Thanks Dave!! Thankfully, Uncle Greg made it in time!! ...Aunt Carol, and cousins, on the other hand, got there just a wee bit late...but that is ok...
And then there was the weather. Good Lord above...it was just my luck that it was the world's worst weather...I realize that we chose to get married in December, but what happened to those beautiful, crisp, snow-tipped branches, with beautiful frost designs on the windows, with beautiful winter sunsets beyond the barren trees??? pshhhhh...uh, yeah right...we got giant snow flakes that turned into gray slush, sleet, and eventually (with perfect timing after the wedding) an ice storm...FREAKIN' LOVELY. Of course that meant fewer people made it to the reception than planned...which was REALLY annoying, considering my mom had paid for all of the people that didn't show up.
Speaking of the reception, guess what?? The centerpieces looked like crap!! The tables were round and big...there was supposed to pewter vases with beautiful red roses in them with lots of red rose petals sprinkled between the centerpiece and the place settings...the vases were wayyyyy too small for the tables, and there were hardly any rose petals. I was so disappointed.
After the reception we went to the hotel, Jack woke up in the middle of the night sick as a dog. He had a horrible sore throat and felt like poop. I guess it was going around because one of my bridesmaids, Sandy, had to leave early because she was so sick, too.
There are about 10 other things I could list that irritated the crap out of me, but I will keep those things in my head. Do not get me wrong, the day was lovely, but I was so glad when it was over. My advice: GO. TO. VEGAS. =)
On a final note, Jack and I were very very thankful to everyone who contributed to making our wedding day so awesome. We got amazing compliments on church decor, my dress, the food at the reception, and the cake.
The next morning, we had breakfast at the buffet. After breakfast, we had "Miller Christmas" in the meeting room! Unfortunately, this celebration was compromised because of the wedding...it was still a nice time spent with the family, though...it was also our opportunity to announce to Jack's sister, brother, and their families that we were expecting a baby...I think Linc said something to the affect of, "wow, Jack, you work fast!!!" ...pretty funny!! Now that we had overtaken the entire 2007 Christmas holiday, it was over, and time to recuperate!!!

The Wedding...Finally!
As my dad and I stood in the back of the church I grew up in, the sound of the violins, cello, and viola filled my heart with happiness. The piece I chose for my wedding march was Canon in D by Pachabel. I realize it is a fairly popular song for this event, but I wanted it to be my own.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wpPk8qk3uQ
My girls walked down the aisle as the snow/sleet/rain came down! My dad and I got our queue. It was time. Unfortunately, we walked down the aisle way too fast!!! When you are in the moment, it is hard to actually know what you are doing!! We got to the front of the church, all was well. My dad gave me away. When it was time for Jack and I to take our seats, there was a small problem...I hadn't sat down in my dress...holy SH!!!T...things were a lil tight!!! WOW...hadn't really thought about that before.
The person we chose to marry us was Deacon Rod Amon. He was a good friend of my dad's and I felt confident that he would do a good job. When we met him at the alter, he couldn't remember his lines!! It was really funny...
Even though it was a Catholic wedding, we decided on a wedding without communion. Jack isn't Catholic, and since it was an option, we decided it would cut down on time. It ended up being a good decision because the weather was going from bad to worse.
After the wedding, there were more pictures...then it was off to the reception. When we got to the reception, safely, we had to wait and wait and wait for the photographer (the ass) to set up his stuff before we could make our entrance. It was so annoying...the entire wedding party was so ready to go and get some drinks and appetizers.
Finally after what seemed like 30+ minutes, we were announced...our entrance song was 'Welcome to the Jungle' by Guns 'N Roses!!! The old people didn't know what to think!! Soon after, Jack's best man, Al, gave a really funny speech. His original speech was to include stories of when Jack's mom used to bring all of her special needs kids to cheer Jack on at his baseball games, and it embarrassed the crap out of Jack...but I asked him to curb the special needs stories...there would be guests there with special needs family members, and I didn't want them to be offended. The same night I asked him NOT to give the 'special needs kids' speech, I asked him to be sure to double check Jack for goobers, boogers, hairs out of place, gunk in his teeth, or anything else that would embarrass me...GUESS WHAT AL'S SPEECH WAS ABOUT????? Yep, that's right...goobers, boogers, hairs out of place, and gunk in his teeth...I could have killed him...in a funny way, that is...
The food at our reception was awesome. We had chosen a chicken marsala, prime rib, salad, honey-glazed carrots, roasted red potatoes, and fabulous rolls.
We danced our first dance together to 'Annie's Song' by John Denver. We both liked that song so much. Most people probably don't even know the song, but it was perfect for us.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C21G2OkHEYo&feature=related
The reception moved right along...it was time to cut the cake!! The DJ played that horrible song from the TV show 'Married With Children' for our cake cutting song...It was not the song we had chosen, but oh well.
When it was time to toss the bouquet, a couple of things happened...we couldn't find the 'tossable' bouquet anywhere....everyone knows you don't toss the bouquet you walk down the aisle with, it's too heavy...so the florist usually makes a separate bouquet to toss...it was LOST!! Finally, after looking high and low, and asking all the workers, they said it had been placed on the cake table........OH. OK. DUH. So, anyway, everything was set, all the single ladies were ready to catch the flowers that I was about to throw. As I get ready to throw them, and live up a moment that can NEVER be re-lived, and with everyone watching me...I throw the flowers..............right into a chandelier...you know, the upside-down kind that catch all the bugs and dust??? ...and bouquets?????? UGHHHHHHHHHHH!!! I was so mad!!! Everyone else thought it was hilarious!! I was embarrassed...the only time I will ever get a chance to do this, I screw it up!!!
I ended up tossing a bridesmaids bouquet, and thank God, my sister caught it...there were little girls out there who could have been stabbed by the flowers...
Rick, my cousin Chrissy's boyfriend, caught the garter!! Guess what?? They got married 10-10-10!!! Yay for my wedding!!!
The reception was finally over and it was time to pack up and go to the Holiday Inn Express across the road. My cousin, Bob, helped take our stuff in because it was raining...what a nice guy!! He parked our car for us, too!
The rest of the night is history! =))
The Day Before And The Morning Of The Wedding
So, the day before the wedding was, of course, super busy. We had friends and family flying/driving in from everywhere. We had the ultra sound. We had the rehearsal. Then, we had the rehearsal dinner.
The ultra sound proved to be a very exciting and emotional experience. I am sure it is for most parents. We just couldn't believe we had created a life inside of me. The baby was seemingly good. There was enough fluid, enough heart beats, etc. The pictures were incredible.
Because the ultra sound and my friends' flight arrival were at the same time, my sister offered to pick up one of my bridesmaids, Sarah, from the airport. We met her for "drinks" after....of course, I had water =( haha.
We brought Sarah back to the apartment, got her settled in...then it was already time to start getting ready for the rehearsal. The rehearsal was uneventful...everyone showed up, that was supposed to. Jack had decided long ago that he wanted to do beer and pizza for our rehearsal dinner. We trekked out to Johnny's Pizzeria in Fenton. The set us up a little buffet of pizza, salad, and bread sticks. Not exactly the worlds classiest rehearsal dinner, but it was yummy.
I decided to tell my best friend, Lindsay, who was 5 months pregnant with her son Brody, that I was expecting. I pulled her aside in the bathroom and told her. She seemed to be pretty shocked...and excited, I think.
The end of the night came quickly. Jack was staying the night at Al's...his best man's house. Sarah came home with me. It was going to be an early morning, we had to start with hair at about 8am.
Cassie, my future mother-in-law, was meeting Sarah and I at the apartment on wedding day. She was coming with us to get her hair done, too!
It is truly amazing how fast time goes by when you HAVE to be somewhere at a very specific time. Amy, my sort-of cousin and hair dresser, did Lindsay's hair, Sarah's hair, Cassie's hair, and my hair. At Amy's salon, there is a little massage therapy room right off the main salon room. When there is a massage in progress, it is asked of the patrons to keep it down so the person getting the massage can relax...fair enough. Sarah didn't realize that...all of a sudden she started screaming because she saw GIANT snowflakes!!! She was so excited!!! ....being from the south, she hadn't seen snow in a really long time!! It was so funny!! The rest of us were disappointed that it was snowing...

My sister, Catherine came from her hair dresser's to Amy's to chill with us...she had her hair and makeup done there!! She looked sooo pretty!!

Then we were done, and had to get to the church to apply makeup and get dressed...holy crap...time was flying. I was getting MARRIED in a couple of hours! People kept asking if I was nervous...HELL NO!!! My thought process was, if you are nervous about who you are marrying, then maybe, just maybe, you should re-think who you are marrying...
Right after we were done getting ready, and BEFORE the wedding we had to get some pictures done...let me just say, I DID NOT LIKE THIS. My photographer turned out to be kind of an ass. The end-result was nice, but he was like the wedding photographer Nazi. No personality, no sense of humor or fun, no leniency...If I were really mean, I would post his name in my blog, but I am too nice for that. ;))
Before I knew it, I was in my dad's office, he was putting a penny in my shoe for good luck, we were lining up to get our flowers (which were NOT what my mom and I ordered), and got into the back of the church, where I could hear the quartet's beautiful notes...

The Countdown Was On!
The wedding was just about a month away!!!! I couldn't believe that time had gone by so quickly!! Jack had his bachelor party. I opted out of a bachelorette party...even long before I was pregnant. I just didn't want one. I am not into the whole, "let's go out with your girlfriends with penis straws, veils, and a bunch of liquor" thing...just not my cup of tea.
Jack's party was thrown by one of his best buddies, Al. Al planned a total guys night out for Jack and his friends. He even hired a friend to be the designated driver! What a smart guy!! The night arrived...and low and behold: THERE WAS A SNOW STORM...really???? Why did this have to be the night...designated driver or not...this scared the crap out of me. It isn't like they were going to go bar hopping locally...they were going to strip clubs and casinos over in Sarnia...CANADA...grrrreat. I kept thinking all evening long that all the wives and girlfriends of the men that were out that night were going to kill me for them going out...Thank the Lord above, they made it back to Flint, pit stopped for a 3am Angelo's Coney Island, and got home safely! PHEW!!
With the tastings wrapped up, replies in, fittings just about done, bachelor party over with, we could concentrate on the coming holidays!!! ...or so we thought.
About a week and a half before the wedding, we got our wedding bands in the mail. We got them from friends of mine because they were jewelers, and could get us a really amazing deal on them...they helped with the engagement ring, too! When we opened the package, we just stared at the rings. We looked at each other. We didn't know what to do. They were the WRONG COLOR!!!!!! My engagement ring was yellow gold, these were a silver color...i am not sure which kind of silver it was, but regardless, THEY WERE NOT THE RIGHT COLOR. omgomgomgomgomg. omg. What were we going to do. I calmly called my friends, and told them what was going on. They said they would send the right ones right away, so we sent the wrong rings back to them....crisis averted!!!
Then, 1 week before the wedding, I was on my way home from work (which was down in Auburn Hills), I was stopped at a light that was red. I was going to turn right onto the highway entrance ramp, when someone decided to rear-end my car...GREAT...seriously??? What was next
Why do always ask, "what's next?!?!?" It is never good to ask this of the universe...being only 11 or so weeks pregnant, when one starts to spot blood, it is never a good thing...so we were really worried...I called my OB, and she scheduled an ultra sound. When did she schedule it for?????? The day before the wedding...wow...ok... It freaked me out because I did NOT want to know if there was a problem with the baby the day before the wedding...but if there wasn't anything wrong, then things would be even better...we were so worried.
The holiday was nice and relaxing. Jack and I spent it at my parents house. It was nice to get away from all of the wedding plans. The wedding wasn't mentioned too much until the end of the day, when mom, Catherine, and I applied trial and error wedding makeup!!! That was fun! My mom hadn't had that much makeup on in 20 years!!!
The next day, Jack worked...and I ran about 14 kajillion errands. We made lists, and lists for the lists, crossed off those lists, and made more lists...organization was the name of the game for me! I got a pedi and mani...that was just what I needed!!! The next day started the wedding festivities...but first that ultra sound.

Wow, We Were PREGNANT!!
I remember thinking that I couldn't sit down the same way anymore or get into the car the same way anymore, or do ANYTHING the same way anymore...it was amusing to realize that I sat down more carefully, and I didn't flop myself into the car the way I did the day before I found out I was with child!! I thought I had to be soooo careful!!! I was afraid of "dislodging" my unborn...I soon came to realize that things were going to not be as different as I thought. I could still sit normally and drive normally, etc.
I made a phone call to my OB-GYN's office to tell them that I just took a pregnancy test and that it was positive! The receptionist answered the phone, and I told her who I was. I mentioned that I was pregnant, and that I needed an appointment. She asked me when my last period began, and I told her. She told me that she would schedule an appointment for December 8th...WHAT?????????????? What did she mean, December 8th???? That was more than a month away!!! It was November 5th!!! Little did I know that they don't do your first pre-natal exam until you are about 8 weeks (or so) along...that did not seem fair to me!!
The next few weeks were super interesting and stressful!! I was going to the seamstress for wedding dress fittings. We were starting the house-hunting process. We were keeping our pregnancy a secret....from everyone!! We had decided to not tell our families until Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving dinner was upon us. Jack's dad, his wife, my parents, and sister were all present. My mom had prepared yet another phenomenal Thanksgiving meal. We were all just about finished with our meals when Jack took my hand under the table. He started to talk about how thankful we both were for all of our parental support with the wedding preparations, and wonderful and helpful they were. He continued with how we hoped that in eight or so months, we could be just as thankful for our new baby!!
The reactions are as follows:
My mom, Karen: jaw dropped, tears, hand and napkin to face.
My sister, Catherine: jaw dropped, tears, big smiles.
My mother-in-law, Cassie: confusion, tears, smiles.
My father-in-law, Joe: smiles, tears (but don't tell anyone), hands in the air in a cheering motion.
My dad, John...........: pursed lips, frown, kind of pissed look on his face.
These were extremely predictable reactions. My mom knew what our plans were about trying to get pregnant. She knew that we wanted to have a baby during the next summer, which meant we had to plan for the beginning of the pregnancy before the wedding. I think she was excited for us. My in-laws...well, I am not sure they knew our plans, but Jack and I had talked about how they would take the surprising news. Jack called his dad's reaction perfectly...he totally said that his dad would do the fist pumps in the air!! I thought that was so funny! We knew that it would take a couple of seconds for the news to sink for Cassie, but that she would also be happy to know that she was going to be an official grandma for the first time!! I knew my sister would be happy and supportive, and would probably have a tear. Then there was my dad...yikes!!! He was NOT happy. He was to the point of angry. I think he was embarrassed that we would get pregnant before our wedding. I think he thought it was inappropriate. I also think that he thought his deacon reputation would be tarnished...all of this I could appreciate and understand. I also know, as I write this three years later, that he wouldn't change things for the world. He told me two days ago (which, just happened to be November 5th, 2010...three years after we found out we were pregnant), that if he knew that "this," pointing to Riley, was going to be the result, he would have never reacted that way...he is a very proud grandpa!!
This was only the beginning of telling people that we were pregnant. We decided (for the most part) not to tell anyone else that we were pregnant until after the wedding. I really wanted to be able to enjoy our wedding without all of the hoopla of baby talk.

This was only the beginning of telling people that we were pregnant. We decided (for the most part) not to tell anyone else that we were pregnant until after the wedding. I really wanted to be able to enjoy our wedding without all of the hoopla of baby talk.

Wondering if I am Doing Something Wrong?
After an unsuccessful attempt at getting pregnant, I asked my mom (a nurse) to help me find an OB. She got back to me and suggested one. I said cool, I will make an appointment to make sure everything is in working order. Then I wondered how she found this doctor, so I asked. She said, "I got her name out of the Yellow Pages!" ...great.
So, I made an appointment. She asked me questions, did her assessment, and told me everything was fine from her point of view. I showed her my temperature chart, and confirmed with her that it was accurate; that ovulation was probably occurring as the chart said. She said that it probably was. COOL!!! I was in a much better mood after talking to her! She was very caring and nice!
Here we were, the beginning of November...Monday the 5th, to be exact. Jack was at work, and I was at home watching Discovery Health Channel. On the TV, was a show called Pregnancy For Dummies. PERFECT!!! Exactly what I needed!! I watched and watched...It went through all kinds of stages of ovulation, pregnancy, delivery, and beyond. During a commercial break, I decided to go take a pregnancy test (which I was told not to take them anymore...Jack said that I was jinxing us by peeing on a stick too much)!! Not that I condone hiding things from your spouse, but I could just throw that one in the dumpster, right?!?! So, I peed on a stick for the 90-ka-jillionth time in 2 months....this was becoming an expensive addiction!!
I figured I would have to wait the 2 or 3 minutes, like usual, but as soon as I looked at the enclosed plastic part, it was already turning pink...which meant it was a POSITIVE pregnancy test!!!! omgomgomgomgomgomgomg!!!!!!!!! WHAT??!!!??!?!!? What was I going to do now??? I told Jack that I wouldn't pee on any more sticks, and I did, and it was POSITIVE!!! I guess I would just have to fess up. I gathered my thoughts and called him. He answered. I don't remember exactly what he was saying to me, but whatever it was happened to be a perfect segue into me saying, "you are going to be a daddy!!" He was blown away...couldn't gather his thoughts! He was so excited!! I couldn't wait for the end of his work day!! I needed a hug!!!
